Abstract (from the chapter) This chapter provides an overview of the psychological issues involved in genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes. These issues are organized around the evidence base in the following areas: (a) the psychosocial and background factors that predict genetic testing uptake; (b) the impact of genetic risk feedback on psychological responses, preventive and management decisions, and health behaviors; and (c) future directions, focusing on the design and evaluation of psychosocial interventions to facilitate information processing, decision making, and psychological and behavioral responses to genetic testing.
